Great affordable bag!
I was doing my first ever mountain hike and didn’t want to spend so much money on a one-time venture. I picked this one based off reviews. It was actually very comfortable! I packed too much (we were expecting 3 different types of weather) so the weight of my pack bothered me, but the bag itself wasn’t digging into my shoulders or adding any kind of burden. The side pockets and the chest / stomach straps helped to distribute the weight. In the first 30 minutes we were in a drizzle and I pulled out the rain cover that came with the backpack. It was working great, until I decided to change clothes about 3 hours in. When I pulled off the rain cover completely I was surprised to find it was wet INSIDE. We were never in a downpour, it was never more than a basic drizzle, but the rain went right through the rain cover. Luckily my bag didn’t get too wet and it just stayed a bit on the surface, but I was pretty disappointed.I’ll be keeping this bag, but if I wind up using it in the future, I’m getting a different rain cover.

Great value for the money. Killer day pack.
I’ve done a few 3-4 mile hikes with it loaded at 15-20 lbs w/ my camp axe, pull saw, hammock/tarp system, rain gear, 1L stainless water bottle, typical odds/ends, and some room to spare. First time was a little uncomfortable but it (or my body) seemed to break in after a few miles and I like it much more now. I love all the storage options, esp the belt pockets. I’ll reiterate what’s been said about the belt. It’s strangely long compared to my other packs and even my big 65L multi night pack. I wear a 32-33 waist in levi’s and almost run out of belt. So anyone 30″ or less won’t be able to tighten it. It leaves probably a foot belt strap hangin on each side once tightened. Will likely cut/melt/sew to be more reasonable though I really don’t notice them when hiking. just look a little stupid. My biggest disappointment is that the load lifters don’t work very well. I think the rear anchor point is too low on the pack. I’m 6’2″, 185lbs and mostly legs (34 inseam). The pack seems plenty long for my spine length so I think its just the geometry/design of the straps/lifters. I wouldn’t expect to haul much weight over 15-18lbs comfortably for more than 5-7 miles before shoulder fatigue sets in. But I have yet to test.I’m used to a semi-tight chest strap which can supplement the load lifter issue above but this pack has elastic on one side which is a foreign feel to me. Not really a problem.Ultimately I really like the pack. The price is tough to beat. I went with this over the osprey, etc. because I love a padded belt with pockets. And mostly because I wanted an inexpensive day pack. I can see pulling 1-2 overnight camps easily with it which would be nice not having to bust out my 65L gregory for.

4.5 stars lots of features and good construction
Shocked at the features, construction, and weight of this bag – all for less than $40. The only thing that this lacks compared to my Osprey and Gregory is a frame and some ventilation. For 1/5 the price this bag will be well worth it for most people.

Seems nice so far, testing to come
I wanted to wait till I could actually use this till I rate it. (I am intending to use it for family day hikes and traveling.) However, the extended warranty has to be started within 15 days of purchase, and I have to leave a rating in order to get the extended warranty. So here I am, rating a product I haven’t actually tested yet . . .It looks and feels sturdy. The straps are nicely adjustable , and I can get it pretty tight, though again, I haven’t gotten to test it withal a load. The bottle pockets are nice and big, but also adjustable to hold in my big double-walled stainless steel water bottles. The compartments and pockets seem nice. I have an insulated lunch bag that will fit nicely inside for packing lunches and snacks that need ice packs.I hope to update this review after I’ve gotten to test it.

Light, practical, very comfortable back pack ever!
It took a while before I received this product as I was traveling and backpacking all over Italy and Europe. It was returned to the seller 2x due tonight being undeliverable. I finally asked the vrbo manager to have it sent to his name so I would actually recieve it on our next stop. This backpack is worth the wait! The pockets and ergonomic design kept my back from feeling achy after a long journey. The zippers were sturdy and I can actually put a lock on it as it is 2 zippers not one. Please see video of the product. The weight of the backpack was not on your shoulders it is on your waist that does not really weigh anything. My husband was surprised that I can carry so much weight on my back! Thanks to this sturdy, very comfortable, ergonomic design of this backpack. PS. I have an inflamed disc on my back and this was the most comfortable backpack I have ever owned.

Great product!
Overall loving this day pack! I haven’t fully packed it up for any overnights or long day hikes, but plenty of space, multiple pockets, and lots of options for exterior storage as well. Only downside is the waist belt is a tad too large, even cinched down fully it just barely sits on my hips without sliding over (my hips where it sits are approximately 33″). But even with that I’m not willing to lower my rating, as everything else seems great. Water bladder fits easily into the pocket and a flap on the side leads to an elastic band on the shoulder strap to keep it in place and accessible. I’ve only packed it up with the essentials for small hikes, but there’s plenty of room left over I would be confident using this for a short overnighter. Have not been able to test its durability as I’ve only used it for 3 hikes, but so far seems to be doing great.

Great Backpack
Bought this for my wife and she loves it. Great size with a lot of compartments. Made of very good material and the zippers don’t get stuck. We go camping often and used it this weekend for a 5 day camping trip. Held up well. Even enjoyed the whistle that comes with the bag.

Nice Backpack.
I really liked everything about this pack. Seemed well made and great for the price. The problem is that it arrived with a broken zipper on one of the side pockets, so was returned.

Awesome back pack
I love the back pack but a little to big for me, at only 5′ 3″. Son had me order it for hiking and a trip to Hawaii. All kinds of pockets and compartments, too heavy for me to carry for a length of time. I love the color and different sections.

Perfect size for a day hike or getaway bag.
I haven’t had the backpack for long but it seems to be good quality and it’s size and features make it ideal for a day pack or a short trip bag.

Waist size Matters, for long hike comfort.
Do make sure your waist is above 32 (US size) if you want a comfortable long hike, with this backpack. If your waist size is below 32, then the waist straps on this backpack won’t fit on your waist, and you shoulders will end up carrying the entire weight of the backpack, which is not ideal. The waist straps should be tight around your waist so your waist carrys the weight of the backpack and not your shoulders.

Perfect Pack for Day Hike
Loved this bag. It held everything including my trekking poles, 2-3 jackets, food, emergency supplies, and 32 oz of water with room left over. Very solid construction and not stiff. Formed well to my back and experienced no back/shoulder pain on a moderate 4-hour incline hike. We encountered rain on the hike and the rain protector tucked into the bottom of the bag was a tremendous convenience to keep interior items dry for the duration. Highly recommend (and I searched dozens of bags before choosing this one). I would buy again.

Great value vs. the name brands
I am a biologist. The only reason I tell you this is to portray my experience with the use of cheap and expensive backpacks in the field. I have used Osprey and Kelty bags throughout my career and still have them. Cheap bags are hit and miss. I was reluctant to buy this bag, but it was for my daughter to use on a trip to Costa Rica and several more upcoming trips. I did not want to buy an expensive brand without knowing if she was going to want something of this size for other trips. If it didn’t work she could always use it for other tasks.I am pleased to report that the Maelstrom bag was awesome. All the pocket sizes and locations are well thought out. The material and stitching was top notch. The rain fly came in handy in Costa Rica, as nothing got wet on the inside of the bag during rain events. None of the zippers were showing signs of sticking during and after the trip. Very happy with the purchase.

Good adjustability, quality, and space
Being a smaller person I was worried about it being too big or not fitting properly and even though the waist strap is a little too big and low, the arm straps are very comfortable and I was able to adjust them for my size. I’m going to use this backpack for both school and trips as my last bag that I’ve had for years is ripping in a few places and is smaller than I’d prefer. The fabric feels really nice and seems to be durable even though it is a little thinner than expected.

Great overnight sized backpack at a great price
I was very excited about this backpack as I needed a reasonably priced back pack sized between 2 of my hydration day packs and my full sized metal frame 65 liter backpack. I was looking for something that would easily carry a days load for camping (or long overnight hikes) and this fit the bill in terms of price and size (about 22 by 14 by 10 inches packed) . I was very impressed upon opening the package by the light weight yet durable fabric. It’s not ultra thick which saves weight but yet is perfect for the loads I’m carrying, which would typically be a full days change, a sleeping bag, battery pack, flashlights, some food, snacks and a hydration pack. You can easily secure hiking poles to this pack as well. A hydration pack is not included, but is not expected at this price point, I plan on using 1 or 2 from my other packs, depending on the trip. A zipped water resistant toiletry sized pack is included and is a nice touch. The backpack has 2 large zipped compartments, with the rear, larger compartment having the most padding and a large interior pocket. As a storage test, I packed 2 sleeping bags in this compartment (pictured). You could add some padded cargo (e.g. clothing, towel) to the front most pocket if carrying a laptop or tablet (which I don’t plan on for this pack) in the thinner front zipped pocket. The rear zipped compartment has separate holes for headphones or a charging cable and one for the tube of a hydration bladder. There is also a small zipped pocket on the top and one on the bottom containing the rain cover (which can also be used for storage). There are lots of straps and pockets on this pack, including one on each of the hip belts (which I love for phones, wallets and keys). There are also lots of loops, both plastic and fabric for carabiners and attachments. There are 2 large side pockets that would comfortably fit very large water bottles, both come with straps for securing the cargo in those pockets. There are 2 cargo loops which can be used for securing a jacket or smaller sleeping bag as pictured, I would opt for this to save interior space for clothing and other items.Overall, I think this backpack is an excellent value and looks like it will last me on the trail and at the campsite, I look forward to taking this out with me soon and will update once it’s been field tested.

Great pack!
I love this pack. You can fit a lot in it. It has multiple roomy pockets, plenty of straps and large water bottle holders. The top pocket is quite small but great for keys or other small items. The straps are comfortable. The “frame” is sturdy yet soft. I like that it comes with a rain cover and a waterproof zip bag.

Great backpack for hiking, comfortable and light!
This is a great backpack for hiking, very light and comfortable. I’ve been using it exclusively for the last month, about 6 trips in total. I love all the pockets and nifty doodads it has. It has all the things any good pack should have, like water bladder pocket, bladder hook strap, water tube hole, water bottle pockets, phone pocket, hideaway rain cover, bottom adjustable dual straps, and pockets aplenty. The primary space is big enough for stuffing a jacket and large snacks even sharing that space with the bladder. The secondary space has 3 pockets for slim items and a slot that is deep enough for a 8×11 notebook (or tablet). The shoulder pads have enough cushion for a comfortable day long hike and keeps you dry with breathable pads. Stitching is impressive and looks well made, should be quite durable long term. I did have to poke a whole in the phone pocket so that headphone wires could route properly to the line port. Just a minor bug on an otherwise well thought out backpack. I would buy this again without any doubt, great hiking backpack!

Nice for lighter loads
Disclaimer: I have no backpacking field experience. Yet. This is my second backpack (not counting ordinary school backpacks). My first backpack was a 90L external frame backpack. I got this 50L because I wanted something a little smaller and the 90L wasn’t terribly comfortable. This thing is super comfortable on my back with around 30lbs of stuff in it. It fits me like a glove. The stitching looks good. No loose threads anywhere. However after packing, trying it on, unpacking, packing, and trying it on a handful of times at home, I doubt this thing will last long. I can already see areas where the seams want to split (the stitching is spreading out). With a lighter load, it would probably be just fine. Therefore, I’m thinking the 40L would be excellent at these prices ($40/40L, $50/50L) if you only need 40L. Again, nothing has ripped yet but I expect it would out on the trail for 3+ days.Pros: Fit, feel, looks, price.Cons: Not super durable but not super flimsy either. The zippers on the belt pockets were a little jingly, so I ran some cord through them the way most of the other zippers have cords in them.

Very good budget backpack
Disclaimer: I received this product for free. For the price, this is a solid backpack. The pockets and compartments are usable and convenient, the size is excellent, it’s very lightweight, it’s comfortable, and it comes with a rainfly – which is a very nice feature.Time will tell if it is durable after a summer of usage, but for what it is worth it seems decently rugged. I will come back in a month or two or three and update this review if my feelings change one way or another.EDIT:It survived several hikes over the summer and fall. I would highly recommend this backpack!EDIT again:Over a year later and still going strong. This is an excellent backpack that is actually worth a five-star rating.I would also like to point out that the company insisted I leave this product a five-star review even before I had used it. When I explained that I would not leave a review for a product I have not used, they complained. Such is the environment Amazon has created.

Great bag for the price. Lightweight, good straps to keep the weight off your shoulders, and durable. I took it caving my first day with the pack and it came out muddy, but looked brand new after being wiped down. I am pleasantly surprised with this purchase.

Backpack is well made, well designed and easily adjustable for a good fit.
This backpack is well made, well designed, and easily adjustable for a good fit. I particularly like that there are two main sections (as opposed to one) and that each section has multiple, inner pockets. At first, I thought I would want more small, shallow pockets, especially ones with zippers, as this backpack only has three small, zippered compartments. But this turned out not to be an issue at all. While using the bag, my items were all strategically organized, easily accessible, and well-secured. The pack itself is also reasonably light, and the number of zippers, straps, and clips makes it particularly user-and stuff-friendly. I also love that the backpack comes with a light-weight pouch, a rain cover, a separate pocket for the rain cover, a brightly colored whistle in case of emergencies, and a hole for my headphones’ wire, which, I suspect, could also be used for a camelback. All in all, this is a great, reliable find, and I can’t wait to use it again.

I love this Backpack!
I’ve had it for about a month and it’s been great. The breathable padding has kept me from sweating so far. I have taken it on several hikes already and the durability as well as comfort have been great. There is no indication of wear and tear after wearing it for a several backcountry hike in the UP.

Solid value for a backpacking bag
I bought this bag on a lightning deal for under $45 and took it with me on a multi-day backpacking trip in the NC mountains. I think for the price it was a hell of a last minute deal to pick up this bag. It was mostly comfortable, had plenty of storage, and the included rain fly was an absolute must have. For my first serious backpacking trip this bag held up well. It went through hell with heavy rainfall, river crossings, MANY thorny plants snagging at it, getting dragged against fallen trees, and being thrown on/off a multitude of times. I had the bag filled to the brim with about 30 lbs of gear, which I now understand was WAY overkill. But there were no rips or frayed seams once I inspected it post-hike.My main complaint that I have with this bag was the fit and comfort after 5 miles of hiking. No matter how tight I pulled the waist strap I could not get more than ~40% of the weight off my shoulders. The waist straps just didn’t pull tight enough around my 32″ waist. Because of that, 5 miles was pretty much the limit for shoulder fatigue and longer than that resulted in a constant need to keep re-positioning the bag. My friends that had fitted REI bags did not have this complaint as they were able to take the weight off their shoulders using the waist strap. Of course their bags were $300 and custom fitted while mine was $45.For context on what this bag held during my trip:-Food and snacks for 3 days-hammock, bug net, rain fly, 50 degree rated sleeping bag-Stanley camping pot, stove, 1 isobutane cylinder-Sawyer squeeze water filter, 2 smartwater bottles, small first-aid kit-A 12x9x4 packing cube with clothes-Various toiletries, survival gear, towel, pair of flip flops, and a rain jacketFor my next trip I will be switching out the hammock setup for an ultralight tent, only bringing one change of clothes, and going a bit lighter on the smaller survival gear items and toiletries to get the weight and bulk down.

COMFORTABLE
Most of my hikes are an hour and a half or less in our nearby state park except when we travel to the mountains for longer hikes. A big reason for needing a backpack is to keep the essentials for our dog on hand. The pack is comfortable and offers good padding, and I love that it not only has a chest strap but a waist one as well. Keeps the stress off my 67-year-old upper body.So far a good product for the money.

Decent Smaller Capacity Backpack
In the short time I have owned this 40L backpack, I have really put it to the test. It’s been on 3 day hikes, 5 overnight backpacking trips, and trips on an airplane. This Maelstrom Hiking Backpack is actually of decent quality and well-stitched. So far I’ve had no failures in the straps, buckles, cordage, pockets, or anything else. It wipes down clean and airs out fresh after every trip. There are plenty of pockets and pouches along with two water bottle pockets to either side for balanced water carry. The zippers have been no issue whatsoever. They are quality and never bind of snag. The straps all stay put and adjust the way you expect them to. The buckles seem sturdy and snap on and off exactly as expected. If you are hiking overnight I think this is a good option at 40L. If you are going for multiple nights, it’s likely you will want something bigger. In my experience, it holds 25 lbs comfortably. I have had up to 35 lbs in it but it was really hard on my shoulders not matter how I adjusted it. Trying to stuff what you need into this smaller pack for multiple days backpack camping is tough. It’s really hard to settle the pack in the right way so that it hangs properly for ease of carry. One good thing about the size, is that this backpack will easily fit into overhead bins as a carry-on if you are flying. I’ve had it on overnight and a 3-night plane trip and I easily fit what I needed into this pack.It seems to spot-clean pretty easily. I have just used cold water on a cloth so far and it’s gotten out typical camping dirt and grime. If it takes on any camp odors like smoke, I have gotten it to air out in a couple of days hanging up in my garage. In summary, this is a great starter pack for an extended day hike or overnight backpacking/camping for someone new to camping that wants to see if they like it without spending much more money on a name brand pack. Ultimately, I upgraded to the Mystery Ranch Bridger 55L backpack for backpack camping as I needed something more suited for 2 – 5 day overnight excursions with heavy water carry. I do still use this Maelstrom 40L whenever I fly out for a night or two.

Durable yet relatively lightweight pack
I bought this backpack for hiking the Camino de Santiago. Since I didn’t need to carry too much, it was the perfect size: everything fit, with plenty of spare room. I particularly liked the small zip pockets on the hip belt sections; they’re the perfect size for a kleenex, a small towel for wiping your face, etc. (though, unfortunately, not quite big enough for a phone–that usually went in my hiking shorts pocket). Some reviewers mentioned issues with the zippers, but I had no trouble with them. The only thing this pack doesn’t have that I wish it did is zippers that go around almost the whole bag to the bottom so that you can really open up the pack. But it had plenty of straps for adjusting, and I was able to get it pretty comfortable for me for such an inexpensive pack. I tried out the rain cover once; it was fine, but not worth the trouble for me since I was using a big poncho that covered the pack anyhow.

Perfect Backpack
I purchased two of these backpacks (one red and the other khaki) to take on a week-long trip to Yellowstone NP. I didn’t want to take a suitcase that I would need to check, so I needed a pack that my husband and I could take on board the plane that would hold a good bit of items. This pack fits the bill. I was able to fit my hiking boots on the bottom along with 5 outfits and my IPAD. The pack has straps that go around your waist which helps make carrying the pack on your back a lot more comfortable. The padded shoulder straps were pretty comfy as well. The pack was a little too long for me as I am 5′ 3″ and weigh 125 but it was manageable. For the trip to the park, we packed a change of clothes, a camera, some water/food items along with some bear spray (A MUST). There was a slight rain but nothing in our pack got wet and there was no color transfer on our clothes. Since returning from our trip, we have used the packs for traveling and so far they have held up very well.If you are in need of a good hiking backpack, I highly recommend that you purchase this one.

Light comfortable bag
First ever Amazon review, this bag is crazy good for how low cost it is, I needed a new hiking bag and didn’t wanna take my heavy backpacks so this thing seemed perfect. Glad I bought it, so many pockets and every zipper and clip works well and holds everything properly, I had a large hydro flask in my side pocket and was jumping over creeks on trails without it falling out by synching the compartment. If your hunting about buying this just do it already, don’t get khaki though I have that and don’t want more people with the same bag

Guess I will see.
Seeing some of the reviews and I think people think this bag is going to survive in the rainforest and the summit of K2. Be realistic about this bag. It’s a good commuter/edc bag that can moonlight as a weekend hiker. If you want rainproof then wrap the gear you stow in it with a trash bag or something else non-permeable. Let’s have realistic expectations of a sub $40 bag guys and gals.

Good value travel daypack
I needed a backpack for travel–specifically, airline & day trips. For airlines, this easily fits my personal electronics, meds, and documents. It’s comfortable enough for a day hike, and has sufficient pockets to organize meds, documents, and snacks in separate compartments. Only 4 stars because the shoulder straps are not placed well.

Well made my choice
I looked at this 41l backpack & the 45l from G4Free. Features were similar in most all aspects. maelstrom won out on features. The zipper ends have a nice finger loop, elastic loops to hold in two side water bottles, umbrella, tripod, waterproof cover stored in bottom pocket, nylon straps on sides to hold longer items in water bottle holder, Velcro to hold a water bladder in back pocket, pass through water tube notch, large main pocket (not padded for computer), larger secondary pocket w/zipper pocket & 2 interior pockets, 2 external tie down elastic holders for umbrella/walking sticks, bottom straps for jacket/bedroll, criss cross elastic across outer pocket to again hold jacket/shell, waist strap with 2 zipper pouches, padded shoulder straps & airway pad on back, hooks for carabiner on shoulder straps. Size is fine for my 6’2” frame.

Lightweight yet sturdy
Love this bag! It’s lightweight but can carry so much. The chest and waist straps really help your back and the color is wonderful!I didn’t give it 5 stars because the zippers a tiny bit temperamental.

New hiking back pay k
Just received this and will be packing for a 10 day hiking trip along the California central coastal next week. Quality appears good with lots of pockets and room to pack what I need. I will be using my 3 liter hydration pouch with it. Update in a couple of weeks after using and doing a full evaluation
