Keeps an edge
My favorite thing about this axe is that it keeps a sharp edge with little effort. (Smith’s Axe & Machete pull through sharpener is all I use on the axe – sharpening puck for the splitter.)I don’t use the splitter much; actually bought it by mistake, but it serves its purpose. For the cost it was definitely worth keeping in my shop.I use the axe all the time, mostly for splitting, store-bought wood bundles. The weight is perfect for me, it’s easy to swing and makes quick work of a wood bundle. It will split a big log and break it down into kindling. Before putting it away, I wipe it down, pull it through the sharpener 10 times in each direction, brush off the burrs, and it’s ready to go next time.I was skeptical of the handle. I originally wanted wood, but like I said, I bought the splitter by accident and liked the quality, but needed an axe. I live in the desert and this past summer it was 115° for too many days to remember. I won’t leave it out in the summer sun, but it otherwise has held up beyond my expectations. My only complaint is this: the edge guard that comes with it sucks. It was warped when I got it and it was lost soon after arrival. Not at all a big deal and barely worth mentioning, but nothings’s perfect, so it should be noted.I love this axe, use it all the time, going to buy another and think I’ll give a couple as gifts. Great tool, great quality, excellent value. And it keeps an edge!

Great Axe for the Price!
I have been splitting wood for many years now so I am always on the hunt for something new to “play” with. My wife got this for me for Christmas two years ago and it has been working fantastic! Nice balance with a very top heavy head that helps with splitting small pieces for kindling. I’ve tried splitting logs or bigger pieces of wood but I think this works best for kindling apllications. I loved it so much that I bought one for my brother-in-law this year. Just some minor advice, make sure your approach to the wood is as close to 90 degrees as you can, as any angle to your approach won’t send the axe all the way through.

Price
For the price it’s actually not bad, we’ll made and rugged, used it to split kindle, the only issue I found was it’s sharpness, found it a bit dull. I love how it comes with its protector.

Good value, well made especially for the price
I purchased this ax primarily to chop out roots that remained from larger bushes I removed. It was a tough job for a smaller ax being some were emended in dirt and there were some small rocks. This ax worked perfectly. It was well made, perfectly sized for close quarter work, had some heft to it, had a comfortable non slip grip, and was ergonomically designed. I received the blade in a very sharp condition. The head looked like it was very well secured to the handle. I anticipate that it will easily sharpen when it’s needed due to the material that the head is made from. Very happy with my purchase. Looks like it will last.

My new favorite gardening tool for cutting roots and digging up root balls.
If you find roots to be annoying when digging a hold to plant something, then get this! This mattock cutter works great for digging out plant root balls. One end can cut throw roots, while the other end can act as a spade and help dig out the area. The item is a great size and not too heavy. I’m very happy with this tool and it has helped me tremendously.

UPDATED: Good Small Cutter Mattock for the Price
PRE-REVIEW NOTE: I had originally posted a one star review for this product because it was much different than what was pictured on the website at the time – photos showed the mattock head locking to the very top of the handle, and another showed a full size mattock being swung over a guys head. After I posted the review, the seller contacted me and told me the photos were wrong and that he corrected them. When I checked he had corrected most, but had left the one with the full size tool up inadvertently. Once I contacted him about that he fixed it. He also refunded my purchase price since I was unhappy with the product. The one negative thing I will say about my interaction with the seller is that he tried to guilt me into removing my review, which is why it took me so long to change it – as a rule I will not change honest reviews at the seller’s request. However, the owner in this case did fix the misleading aspects of the product description, and the issues in my original review no longer apply to this product. On to the updated review:****************************************************************************************************************************As long as you know what you are actually ordering this is a great little cutter mattock for the price. The key word here is “little” – it is slightly larger than a standard hammer, so it is more for gardening and getting through roots of smaller trees and bushes than it is for removing a full size stump. The dimensions of the product are clearly given, and the erroneous pictures were removed, so anyone ordering should know what they are getting if paying attention. The tool is light and easy to use in tight spaces, which is key if you are doing landscaping in a garden bed. You can easily operate it with one hand, which makes it much easier to get at the roots of a bush that is surrounded by others. The head is sharp enough for getting through most roots, but could stand to be sharpened a bit.I am taking one star off because of a little concern about the mechanism for mounting the head. The mattock comes in 2 pieces and you attach the head by sliding it up the mattock until it stops. However, there is no notch or other mechanism to secure the head – you just bang it on the ground to mount it. This is not specific to this mattock – I’ve seen other less expensive ones that do the same thing, but I am able to still remove the head pretty easily after putting it on, which makes me concerned that it could come loose during use. I solution I have seen on similar tools was to install small wood screws right underneath the bottom of the head after it is installed.Overall an excellent cutter mattock for gardening needs for the price!

Great buy for the price!
I have used this to hand dig a small putting green out in my wooded area. 3 x 10, 5 inches deep. It has plowed through rock and root for the last two months. I would totally buy again if this were to break.

Solid build
Was not impressed with the sharpening process. I haven’t had occasion to use the axe yet but find the blade to be very rough with numerous “pins” in the blade. I’m quite sure these will break off with use leaving many small flat spots across the blade. Hopefully I’m wrong and will reevaluate after use.

Decently Priced Axe/Hatchet
Axe arrived a few days ago. Very sharp out of the box. The cover for the blade is of very poor quality. Blade cover broke from a three-foot-high fall. Decent axe for the price you pay, overall.

Worked pretty well. Until
I let a friend borrow the axe while i was at work. He accidentally left it on a black metal table in the boiling sun for a few days. So when he wwnt to chop some branches, the head stuck into the wood and separated from the handle.

Great for splitting wood for campfire
I love the small size of this that is perfect to keep with our camping gear. The rubber cover is great and helps me feel safe when it isn’t in use so the sharp edge isn’t just sitting around. It chops through wood great to split logs. It’s sturdy and seems well made!

Great little tool but order with hope and a prayer
This is a great little tool, perfect size for my needs. But note that a variety of heads are available for this tool so be careful when ordering (which I was, I had a very specific need) – and even more importantly hope very hard that the warehouse pickers can tell all these tools apart. Sadly, I received the wrong tool the first time. Then had to waste my time driving to Whole Foods to send it back – thanks loads Amazon for putting the burden on me when you send the wrong item. A replacement was reordered and shipped automatically and it arrived too late so I had to do the work with a less suitable tool. Great tool encumbered with all around sub par service by Amazon.

I cannot lie, I chopped down the tree!
I had been trying to get rid of this 13 ft tree that sort of grew up on my small patio. No, I had not planted any seeds. The greenish wood quickly caused the saw to bind. I received this hatchet the very next day. It dispatched the tree within the hour even counting the time I rested my 81 year old heart, lungs, and back!If it can do that for an old guy it has to be great!

Efficient and light weight without being flimsy.
We have a patch of lawn we are removing and this tool is great! I have zero interest in using a full-size pick/mattock when I can use this and get more work done faster, more precisely and with less wear and tear on me. My only caution is that as sharp as it is it’s not for the kiddos or inattentive.

Perfect kindling hatchet, camp axe.
The extra weight in the head and the design of the handle make this a versatile hatchet. I needed a hatchet for kindling and have found that this one is rugged enough to split camp wood. Holding the handle in different places allows for precision handling for shaping a stake or something. Great balance makes for longer working times without fatigue. The steel takes an edge well but isn’t going to shave you. Overall I have to say that this is a great value. No, I haven’t tried throwing it.
